the power of cats

The morning brought busyness, and so, I am writing this blog on Wednesday evening, with a coffee in a teacup. No, caffeine is not recommended at such an hour, but the air is cool, almost chilly, and I was craving that coffee taste.

I will deal with the obligatory headaches and insomnia later.

As I sit in my room, gazing out upon the lamp-lit street, I notice that the evenings are becoming shorter, and summer is coming to its gradual, yet sudden close.

This annual observation usually brings a sadness but, right now, I feel content.

Peaceful.

Beside me, a trustee companion. Penny, my lovely cat.

She woke up, saw me, ran over for a cuddle, and then went back to sleep.

She is ever the darling. Before Penny joined the family, we had had Tilly, whom I believed was a guardian angel on Earth, taken form as a grey tortoiseshell kitty cat. Unfortunately, she rejoined the angels in kitty heaven a few years back, which is why Penny came into our lives.

She is the first cat to form a very playful friendship with our ferrets, and the first cat I’ve known to be such a dominant yet soppy snuggle bug. She knows what she wants. Attention - and she’s damn well going to get it! Though having a rather large four-legged fluff ball resting on the laptop keyboard you’re currently attempting to use may be frustrating, it is also undeniably adorable. Cats weren't worshipped for no good reason, you know!

Cats tend to have a bad reputation in society. The poop in your flower beds and they’re stereotypically greedy, selfish and careless animals. But I beg to differ. I cannot tell you how many times I have been lifted from a severely low place, thanks to a little help from a furry friend. Their presence and their companionship are like no other, and it’s amazing how much love you can feel just by making eye contact with a feline friend. Their unbreakable gaze of contentment is so reassuring and there’s something very therapeutic about petting and grooming cats, as you can sense their mutual enjoyment. It doesn't always seem as though it's for their benefit, either. They will find me when I'm poorly or just simply feeling down in the dumps, and they will sit with me. Sometimes, that's all anybody needs. A loyal friend.

Okay, I realise I probably sound like your typical ‘crazy cat lady’, but if so, then so be it. I am proud to be a cat lady, and I already knew I was crazy, anyway!

All I know, and all I wanted to say this week, is that cats are actually wonderful creatures. So, please, give them a chance. I’m tired of hearing people tell me that they hate cats because they’re had one or two bad experiences with one cat in particulars.

Semirant over.
